HARD QUESTIONS
Could be easy solutions
Good news from New Zealand -
'New Zealand’s High Court has ruled that the country’s $53 billion sovereign wealth fund is operating under unlawful ethical investment rules, after activists challenged investments linked to Israel’s military occupation of Palestinian land.
Palestinian New Zealanders Maher Nazzal and Rawaa Elhanafy, and activist John Minto argued that the policies allowed investment in companies implicated in Israeli human rights abuses.
At the center of their case is a legal requirement that the fund be managed “in a manner consistent with avoiding prejudice to New Zealand’s reputation as a responsible member of the world community.”
“This is an important and timely win for Palestine,” said Minto, co-chair of the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa, which supported the legal challenge.
The decision handed down this month raises broader questions about how sovereign wealth funds account for human rights risks in their global investments.'
